At the end of last year we launched two new e-courses, one of which is the [Developmental feedback e-course](https://koolitus.sunergos.ee/arendav-tagasiside/). By now, several leaders have completed the course individually, and the leaders of three organisations as a team. The course has been taken in different ways:

1.  learning independently;
2.  with a virtual opening and closing meeting led by a trainer and personal feedback on the homework;
3. with the team together in the same room, watching the course on a big screen and doing the exercises together.

We have asked participants for feedback to find out whether the course does its job, that is, whether it helps leaders hold feedback conversations more effectively, meaningfully and confidently. We also wanted to know how to make our e-courses as convenient as possible for users, so that participants can focus on the content and don’t get stuck on technical difficulties.

The prevailing feedback has been that the course is surprisingly thorough. It is not just watching a video – you also have to work on yourself along the way. If a participant is interested in growing as a giver of feedback, the course and its self-analyses and exercises are a great support. The course helps you prepare well for a specific conversation, gives confidence, helps overcome fears of talking about difficult topics and broadens your understanding of why and how to hold feedback conversations. At the same time, if a participant’s motivation is low (read: someone else thought they should take part) and they haven’t worked out for themselves what goal completing the course will help them achieve, the course may feel long and tiring.

Here I share the more detailed feedback of two participants to illustrate the value the course offers participants and also the particularities to keep in mind.

## Indrek Kalamees, AS Tallinna Sadam, captain of the ferry Tõll:

What I really liked about the feedback course was that I was able to make it clear to myself that feedback is much more than just a chat, and that both giving and receiving it matter. Also how I can improve one detail or another in a conversation, both for myself and for the other party. What to avoid and, on the other hand, what I don’t do but definitely could. I liked that during the course I started thinking along and analysing myself in depth, both in work situations and in my personal life.

It’s also good that from now on I can use a concrete plan for holding conversations and I have clear keywords to rely on. I also know how to move on in one case or another when things reach a dead end. At work, my giving and receiving of feedback is very short in time, which makes it all the more important that it is meaningful and successful.

It came as a surprise to me that using the “hamburger” is not actually the best way.

I would also praise the pleasant choice of music during the exercises – it was very easy to concentrate.

## Kairi Nodapera, HR manager, AS Tallinna Vesi:

**What made the developmental feedback e-course useful and valuable for you?**

I really appreciated:

1. The thorough and systematic approach
2. The convenient and compact workbook for writing down your thoughts
3. The flexibility – the chance to pause the training at a suitable point and continue from where you left off
4. I also really liked the tools at the end of the workbook and the recommended reading

Completing the course and going deeper into the topic was supported by its variety: lecture, analysis, video, exercises and the combination of videos and workbook.

Reet’s calm voice and examples helped me focus and built trust. The calming music behind the exercises was also supportive. The course included several very good exercises, e.g. the map of expectations and the checklist for successful feedback.

**Reet’s comment:** I would point out here that for some participants my calm voice and manner were too calm, and they would have liked a more entertaining presentation. Every trainer and speaker has their own style that comes from who they are, and I believe authenticity creates trust. My style may not appeal to everyone, so I recommend watching the sample lesson before buying the course – it gives a sense of how the course might suit you or your team.

**Was there anything distracting or disturbing about the course?**

As I am fairly quick in what I do, the time for an exercise was at times too long. On the other hand, there are people who need more time and depth, and in fact you could move on at your own pace once the exercise was done.

**Reet’s comment:** As a few other participants also found the exercises long, we shortened the time set aside for them. We also added a technical help video to the training that shows how to make using the e-course convenient for yourself, including how to use bookmarks in the video to move between topics or return to the right topic after a break, and how to make the video lecture play faster or slower.

Based on my experience, I recommend the developmental feedback e-course to anyone who wants to sharpen their skills in giving and receiving feedback, including my friends and colleagues, and I am grateful to myself for taking the time to complete it.

If you would like advice on whether and in what form the e-course would best suit your organisation, contact me: [**reet@sunergos.ee**](mailto:reet@sunergos.ee).

The course is currently available in Estonian, but if there is interest, we are ready to create a course with the same content in English.
