At the beginning of the year, on 8 January, we had a good opportunity to welcome our valued clients to a playful workshop on using picture cards.
The only limit to how cards can be used is creativity – it is always possible to find new situations and questions to explore with them. Cards are most commonly used to open meetings, sessions and trainings, to make good contact both with each other and with the topic, when looking for solutions to problems, when analysing what has happened, or for setting future goals. Cards can be used for self-analysis, in one-to-one conversations and when working with a larger group.
Cards speak the language of pictures; instead of our usual linear thinking they activate the right hemisphere of the brain and often bring hidden topics to the surface. One participant in our workshop described it very aptly: “Working with cards is like riding an express bus – you get into the topic quickly, instead of bumping along stop by stop so that in the meantime you forget where you were going.”
Just as the ways of using them are limitless, so are the ways of interpreting the pictures. There is no right or wrong answer here; the person who chose the card gives the picture the interpretation that speaks to them. Sharing our interpretations with each other brings us closer and enriches us. Our worldview broadens and trust in each other grows.
Preparing and running the workshop also gave us a clearer structure for the ways of using the cards. Although the workshop was only 2 hours long, every participant had a personal moment of being touched and took home new perspectives on their personal topics. With each exercise, the topics were dealt with more deeply.
